Little
Lilacs, oil on canvas 2009
'Art and About' in 2010
The year began with a flurry of activity in my studio
as I completed several new, vivid floral paintings,
most of which were delphiniums. I am fond of painting
flowers, since the subject comes easily to me and
is especially inspiring during the winter months.
Painting the bright hues of fragrant flowers is an
experience of which I never tire. After finishing several
canvases, I framed the paintings in anticipation of
exhibiting them in future shows.
In the spring, I was happy to make contact with The
Wonderful Gallery in Freeport, Maine, where the
owner reviewed my work with enthusiasm and offered
me a show. I gladly accepted, and in late March
enjoyed a near-solo exhibit of my floral paintings
new and old. The display was impressive and the
reviews favorable. I enjoyed a good write-up in
The Portland Press Herald which can still be read on-line here.Sadly, however, due to slow traffic and tough
economic times, the gallery closed soon after my
show. Whereas I was sorry to see the gallery close,
I was happy to have the opportunity to exhibit my
work. The rest of the year I painted mostly at a distance,
since time did not afford me much, if any, studio
time. Nevertheless, I kept my LIVING Art alive by
taking photos for prospective paintings and
exploring new expressions for my art. When
possible, I indulged myself in colorful pastel
drawings. Toward the end of November, I happily
returned to my studio with renewed enthusiasm
to 'talk with the paint' once again. In a short time,
several new canvases were born!
